BROOKLYN AVIATORS: Taking Body Blows and Counter Punching; Coach Miller's Boys Will be Fighting to the Very End.
So where are we? Who are we? And what are we doing? Sorry, since attending Ace's birthday party in The Hangar two weeks ago, I've had New York Giants of the brain.
The A's are currently skating with the second division in fifth place. Although Brooklyn (55) has more total points than fourth place Akwesasne (51), the Warriors lead the Aviators by percentage points. Cape Cod, Delaware, and Danville, round out the FHL trailers.
New Jersey has been, and still is the clear cut power of the circuit with 93 points this season. Second place 1000 Islands trails them by thirteen points. And Danbury has recently made a climb in the standings (59 points) into third place.
Fourteen games remain on the schedule. The A's will have between their February 2nd game versus Danbury, and March 4th, to earn themselves a spot along with the top seeds for a hopeful spot in the playoffs. The team's situation does not seem as dire as they faced last year with twenty-some games left in the season. They just need a little consistency right now.
Who are we? For starters, back-up goalie; Peter Dundovich; was waived on January 27, by the Boss-Man Coach Miller. Goalie Richard Scarsella came and went. Adam Avramenko was then signed to back-up Josselin St. Pierre but has since been loaned out to the CHL. So that leaves rookie Jeff Rose as Flatbush's back-up goalie. Back on January 24th, Jarrett Rush and Andrew Owsiak were packing up to play for ECHL clubs but have since returned. And lastly, Brendan Baumgartner was traded to the 1000 Islands Privateers for defensemen Vinny Geonnetti.
No Brooklyn. Although several players remain, this is not the same team that went on a torrid twenty-some game winning streak last season and steamrolled into the playoffs. Coach Miller continues to tinker with this roster as he has all season. Over that time, too many games were lost, specifically earlier on in the schedule, for a failure to secure wins during regulation time and thus finishing many nights shy one additional point.
What are we doing? For starters, we're suffering from a lack of identity. Are we still a team led by veterans; Chris Ferazzoli; K.C. Timmons; Jesse Felten; Chris Scampoli; and Casey Mignone? Or did our gumption exit along with Vladimir Nikiforov; Stephen Obelnicki; and some of last year's favorites like Puntureri, and Goffredo? And of the newer class? Rookie; Matt Atsoff; Trent Trentowski; Lucas Schott; Steve Koich; will they be making this their team?
Secondly, we're bobbing up and down like an ocean buoy. The month of January is representative of just how up and down this season has gone for the Floyd Bennett Aviators. They started the month losing their first five contests. Then went on a five game winning streak which was snapped this past Saturday by the Whalers in an 8-2 drubbing up in Danbury. And so the A's end the month with a 5-6 record.
When they resume play Thursday, the Whalers and Brooklyn will play a home and home starting in Danbury. The series then comes to Hangar Five on Saturday night. They'll finish the weekend in New Jersey as they take on the Outlaws again, whom they finally defeated this season for the first time.
We need to gain some altitude Boys.

BKN Aviators ~ Skates of Flatbush in Need of a Save

BROOKLYN AVIATORS: With Their Goalie Situation on Ice, The A's Have Been Boarded by a Three Game Losing Streak.
With Josselin St. Pierre still out of action, the A's goalie situation remains on ice. Recently signed Richard Scarsella made his first start for Brooklyn on the road Wednesday night against the Cape Cod Blue Fins.
The game itself was a case of too little too late. Richard Scarsella kept his team close over the first two periods facing nineteen shots and allowing only one goal. Cape Cod then scored two more in the third period before the A's tallied their first of the evening with nearly three-quarters of the final period expired. Nick Petriello's goal made it a 3-1 game in Cape Cod's favor. The Fish then scored the slammer just over a minute later. Brooklyn made it a 4-2 game on a power play goal by Jesse Felten with under a minute left in regulation time. But that's all they'd get this night.
The loss was their third in a row. They dropped a pair last weekend to second place 1000 Islands in Upstate New York. Peter Dundovich started both those games in Josselin St. Pierre's absence and suffered the losses. The Privateers doubled up on the Aviators by a 10-5 combined score.
The A's have a busy weekend ahead of them. Tomorrow night they'll start a home-and-home series against the first place New Jersey Outlaws. Friday night's game will be in Hangar Five. Then it's off to Jersey. They'll return to The Hangar again for a Sunday afternoon game versus the Danbury Whalers.
Last week in response to a question I Tweeted Aviators Broadcaster Carmine Vetrano, he responded by saying Josselin St. Pierre should be ready for this weekend's games. Brooklyn's Coolest could use him right about now.

BROOKLYN AVIATORS: Coach Miller Still Tinkering Between the Pipes.
Coach Miller is still trying to fix cracks in the pipes. Brooklyn tabbed back-up Peter Dundovich to start Friday night's game against 1000 Islands. Since Thomas Lee's release, Josselin St. Pierre has started most of Brooklyn's games. On December 31st, Coach Miller then signed and started Jeff Rose (rookie) last week in a winning effort against Cape Cod. On January 5th, Coach signed goalie Richard Scarsella to a contract, and was listed as the back-up to Peter Dundovich last night. With no indication of any players' release, the A's tentatively have four goalies under contract.
Friday night however, it wouldn't have mattered if they had Eddie Giacomin between the pipes. Brooklyn wasn't scoring against Matt Anthony and the 1000 Island Privateers. He held the A's to one goal on thirty-three shots. The Skates of Flatbush' lone goal came in the second period of a 4-1 loss. That goal came courtesy of Andrew Scampoli's second of the season. The assists came via newly acquired Henry Coxe, and Steve Koich.
Brooklyn played a relatively penalty free sixty-minutes, but went 0-3 when playing with the man advantage. Peter Dundovich faced thirty-three shots and stopped thirty. The Privateers scored an empty-netter to close out the game.
The two teams will do it again tonight and who starts in net for Brooklyn is any one's guess right now. The team from upstate New York is still firmly entrenched in second place with sixty-two points on the season. The New Jersey Outlaws continue to run away from the circuit with seventy-one points. Brooklyn? We're still in the first division with thirty-nine points this season. Our fourth place standing is slightly ahead of the Akwesasne Warriors who claim fifth place with thirty-two points.

BKN Aviators ~ Fixing Cracks in the Ice

BROOKLYN AVIATORS: Beware! Coach Miller is Watching.
Look what the New Jersey Outlaws did to us...again! New Jesery has only lost three times all season, and the Aviators quite literally did little to change that. We are now 0-6 versus the cross-harbor bad guys. And in those games Brooklyn has been out-gunned 34-16, largely based on the branding they put upon us last weekend at the Outlaw's Jersey hideout.
Thursday's game was bad, and Friday's game got worse.
Casey Mignone's two third period goals weren't enough to undo the damage from the first two periods of Thursday's game. The first period went fairly enough. Former Aviator; John Goffredo; scored a mere :41 seconds into the game for New Jersey. From then on Brooklyn would never lead nor tie at any time over these two games. Half way through the period, the Outlaws scored again for a 2-0 lead. But Brooklyn had an answer for that one. Jordan Bernier scored a power play goal at the 14:27 mark, to bring the A's within a goal again.
However, New Jersey poured it on in the second period with two more goals against Brooklyn goalie Josselin St. Pierre. Then in the third period, New Jersey answered Casey Mignone's two goals with two from Brett Liscomb making the final score 6-3 Outlaws.
Friday night? Let's just say after Thursday's night loss, Peter Dundovich made the start in goal for Brooklyn. And let's just say Josselin St. Pierre still had to enter the game in the third period in relief of Dundovich. In the first period, New Jersey took fifteen shots against Dundovich. Two got by for a 2-0 lead. In the second period, New Jersey took nineteen shots against Dundovich. Four more got by for a 6-0 New Jersey lead. Coach Miller then turned to Josselin St. Pierre to stop the bleeding. New Jersey then took seventeen third period shots against him. Two more goals found net to make this game an 8-0 final.
No; there was no Brooklyn offense to speak of. This was perhaps their worst defeat of the season. Their previous low might have been their 8-2 loss in Cape Cod back on November 22nd. But clearly getting shut-out 8-0 by the top team in the league qualifies as the worst.
Whether because Coach Miller most certainly had something to say regarding the last two games, and the previous night's game in particular, or, whether the Aviator skaters realized they just may have cost their goalie his starting job, - which ever the case A) - signed back on December 31st; new Brooklyn goalie Jeff Rose made his first start in net. And B) - the Aviators responded to a message apparently received loud and clear, and scored six first period goals against the Cape Cod Blue Fins on Saturday night back in The Hangar. The final score of that game was 7-3 A's.
With the win, Brooklyn may have salvaged an otherwise disastrous weekend against the League's top team. But more importantly, some Aviator players might start thinking about what it takes to keep an A's jersey on their back in Coach Miller's eyes.

TEAM LEADERS:
After twenty Aviator games this season, Andrew Owsiak has taken over the team lead in points with twenty-seven, versus twenty-six for long time team leader Chris Ferazzoli. Andrew Owsiak is also tied with Jesse Felten for the team lead in goals with twelve. While Chris Ferazzoli still leads the team with sixteen assists. Jesse Felten leads all Flatbush skaters with a stellar +15 rating.
Between the pipes, Peter Dundovich actually owns the League's best Goals Against Average with a 2.19 mark. But that is based on seven games played as Brooklyn's back-up goalie. The rest of the League's regular goalies are averaging about twelve starts by now. Dundovich owns a 3-1 record. The A's starting goalie, Josselin St. Pierre is 5-3 since signing on to replace Thomas Lee. Josselin has a 3.51 GAA in ten games.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE:
Thursday and Friday the Coolest Guys in Brooklyn are headed to New Jersey for another back-to-back set against the first place Outlaws. And they aren't in first place for nothing. BKN Aviators ~ First Look at First Place 1000 Island Club

BROOKLYN AVIATORS: The Skates of Flatbush Get Their First Look at First Place 1000 Islands Privateers.
Tuesday night in Hyannis, the fifth regular season game between Brooklyn and the Cape Cod Blue Fins was a resounding win by the Fish. They out-shot Flatbush in the game and outscored them by a wide margin. The 8-2 final score now gives the Fins a 3-2 season series lead over the A's.
The story of the game? The Skates of Flatbush were 1 for 15 on the power play. Cape Cod? - 3 for 5. What makes this worse? Cape Cod's fifth goal of the game came short-handed.
Cape Cod seemed content keeping the A's on the power play and did so for forty-eight generous minutes. Actually, the Blue Fins tried instigating a whole lot-o-stuff Tuesday. But it didn't seem like Brooklyn cared to bite on the steady flow of baiting. I'm wondering if Coach Miller had anything to do with that after a brutal session against the Cape last Friday. And yet in fifteen opportunities with man-advantages, somehow, the Aviators could only manage one puck past Blue Fin goalie; Wes Vesprini.
A's starting goalie; Thomas Lee; on the other hand, lasted two and a half periods before Coach Miller had seen enough and mercifully lifted Lee in favor of Peter Dundovich who made his second relief appearance of the season. Dundovich stopped all four shots he faced in a little less than ten minutes played. Thomas Lee suffered his worst night of the season in net. Of forty-three shots on goal, eight managed to get past him in what turned out to be a Blue Fin rout.
Brooklyn's Andrew Owsiak scored a first period goal, assisted by Anthony Iaquinto. The A's second and last goal was a power play effort credited to K.C. Timmons, assisted by Andrew Owsiak and Vladimir Nikiforov.
The loss drops Brooklyn's record to 5-4-3, and remain at eighteen points.

BKN Aviators ~ Flatbush Faithful Get First Two Wins

BROOKLYN AVIATORS: The Skates of Flatbush Finally Gain Their First Two Home-Ice Victories; But Needed to Hurt Some Feelings Along the Way.
In the first meeting between the Danville Dashers and Brooklyn Aviators, our gracious and most hospitable Flatbush Avenue Skaters allowed the visiting team from Illinois to score the opening goal midway through the first period SATURDAY night in Hangar Five. The token offering and respectful welcome to Kings County are just some of the classy reasons why our local hockey club are The Coolest Guys in Brooklyn. Hospitality has it's limits though. And on Flatbush Avenue, well...the definition of that word changes a little. But how is a team from Illinois supposed to know that? ...Answer; - gotta learn the hard way.
The locals responded with four first period goals. The first one should have served as an omen for Danville. It came on a short-handed effort by Brooklyn's Steve Koich at the 12:02 mark. Danville should have dashed away then, before Vladimir Nikiforov put Brooklyn ahead at 17:52 with his eighth goal of the season. Then inside the final minute of the first period, Andrew Owsiak effectively put an arrow through the Dashers' night with two more goals within twenty-one seconds of each other.
Ouch!
Danville came out fighting to start the second period however. After Ken Trentowski's period opening goal at 2:55 put Brooklyn up 5-1, Danville's Chris Affinati decided to drop gloves with Brooklyn's Jari (Rocky) Balbotowski. Two minutes later, the Dashers netted their second goal of the game scored by Ryan Stern to make it a 5-2 game.
It was a nice try on their part. Any Brooklynite can appreciate the effort. But alas, it was a mistake on their part. And Brooklyn showed them just how much they didn't appreciate Danville's behavior in our Hangar. For good measure and to teach the expansion team a lesson for the next time, the A's went on to score another four-pack of goals. Between 8:01 and 16:17 of the period, Jesse Felton sandwiched a Casey Mignone goal with two net-finders of his own; - Felton's second came on a power play. Andrew Owsiak completed a hat-trick with his goal at the 16:41 mark to make this a 9-2 affair after just forty-minutes of hockey. Danville scored one more inconsequential goal in the third period but wound up leaving Brooklyn a wounded animal.

Peter Dundovich started in net for Brooklyn after Thomas Lee started Wednesday and Friday night's games. Peter stopped 22 of 25 shots on net for his second win.
Saturday's victory over Danville was Brooklyn's second consecutive home-ice win. After posting an 0-2-2 record playing on Flatbush ice, the Aviators finally gained their first win inside Hangar Five the night before. The home crowd's first taste of victory this season came against our newest adversary; the Cape Cod Blue Fins. Brooklyn did some Friday night fishing off Jamaica Bay and enjoyed their fresh catch with a 5-3 filleting-o-The-Fish. Brooklyn's first home-ice win also evened the season series between these new enemies at two games apiece.
After Friday night's opening period of civilized hockey ended in a 1-1 tie thanks to goals by Cape Cod's Steve Brown and Brooklyn's Jesse Felton, the A's got the better of the Fins during a ferocious second period mix of delinquency and thuggery, with just a pinch of Hockey for taste.
Brooklyn's Chris Ferazzoli scored at 0:35 into the period. More than just making this a 2-1 game, his goal lit a fuse that set-off the rest of the night. For just over a minute later, Aviator's defenseman Jarrett Rush tapped into his inner pugilist and earned a swath of penalty minutes after he picked a fight with Cape Cod's Brad Surdam. As tossed gloves made their way back to their rightful owners, short-tempered Jarrett was charged with two minutes for Instigating, another five for the Fighting Major, and an additional ten minute Game Misconduct, for a total of seventeen penalty minutes. That translates to one thousand and twenty seconds of Goon Time. Now that's how you seize the moment with conviction. No more hockey game for you.
A little under six minutes later, hostilities resumed as Brooklyn's Colin Ronayne and Cape Cod's Kevin McCreedy took swipes at each other. The hey-makers didn't stop there. At the 10:00 mark, Brooklyn's Anthony Iaquinto and the Cape's Luke Frey decided they'd introduce each other to their fists as well.
With about three minutes left in the second period, at least Jesse Felton still had enough composure to score his second and third goals of the game for a hat-trick. His goal at 17:05 put Brooklyn ahead by a 3-1 score. His third goal of the game then came on a power play at 18:53 which extended Brooklyn's lead to 4-1, and which also turned out to be the game winning goal.
In the final period, of all things, a hockey game broke out again. The return of sportsmanship allowed Cape Cod to actually use athleticism and skill to get back in this game. But, apparently Casey Mignone didn't get the memo and got whistled for slashing at the 7:45 mark. The Blue Fins' Anthony Sarno scored on the ensuing power play to make this a 4-2 game.
With time running out on the Blue Fins, the decision was made to pull the goalie in favor of the extra skater. At 19:07, that decision paid off. Garrett Peters' goal brought the Fins to within a goal. Continuing to gamble with that strategy in order to tie, the riskier aspect of the plan materialized and ended Cape Cod's night with a loss instead. Brooklyn's Vladimir Nikiforov scored on an empty net at 19:22 to send the Blue Fins off into the Jamaica Bay night to sleep with the rest of the fishes.
Aviators' starting goalie; Thomas Lee; faced forty-three total shots, and turned back forty for his third win of the season and a job well done; for Cape Cod out-shot Brooklyn in this game 43-32.
...And with two more wins under their belts, a successful weekend against the Federal Hockey League's bottom two teams comes to an end. But Brooklyn and Cape Cod will have little time to heal their wounds. They have a quick turn-around this week and will face-off against each other again Tuesday night up in Hyannis.

BKN Aviators ~ Mid-Week Rumble in Danbury

BROOKLYN AVIATORS: 3-0-1 on the Road; A's Take-Off for a Mid-Week Melee in Danbury.
Brooklyn's Coolest and the Danbury Whalers will drop the puck on Week Four tonight with a mid-week game. The two rivals have split their first two meetings. Brooklyn took the first game, while Danbury recently defeated the A's last Saturday.
After tonight's game, Brooklyn has an off day on Thursday before resuming their weekend schedule on Friday against Cape Cod, then Danville on Saturday. Both those games will be played in Hangar Five. For the Danbury Whalers, this game will be the first of four games in four nights.
Entering tonight's game, the Aviators are sitting in fourth place with twelve points, behind a three way eighteen point tie for first place between 1000 Islands, Akwesasne, and New Jersey. Then comes Danbury behind Brooklyn with nine points this season. Danbury is 3-3-0 this season. Brooklyn is sporting a 3-2-3 record thus far.
The Aviators have done much better on the road this season than they have back at The Hangar in Brooklyn. The A's are 3-0-1 as visitors. On home-ice however, they are yet to win their first game, sporting an 0-2-2 record there.
Thomas Lee's last start came Thursday in a game Coach Miller decided to make a call to the bullpen and bring in Peter Dundovich. Then Coach Miller charged Peter with starting the A's following two games last weekend. Both goalies have now participated in at least four games each. It will be interesting to see who gets tonight's start in net.

BKN Aviators ~ Gain Four Points the Hard Way

BROOKLYN AVIATORS: Kings County's Coolest Earn Four More Points After a Very Hard Fought FHL Week Three.
The latest game in the rivalry between the Whalers and Aviators goes to the team from Danbury two periods to one.
A late first period goal by Devin Guy which gave Danbury a 1-0 lead came on a power play after Casey Mignone was called for slashing.
Brooklyn carried the second period play with two goals. After just nineteen ticks off the clock, Anthony Iaquinto scored the tying goal. Twenty-one seconds later, Danbury got whistled for tripping putting Brooklyn on the power play. And one minute and thirteen seconds after Iaquinto's goal, Andrew Owsiak cashed in on the man-advantage at the 1:32 mark with the go ahead goal.
But Danbury had final say in the third period. Two unanswered goals; the first by Greg Holt, then a power play goal by Stephen Mallaro; finished off the A's 3-2, and ended Brooklyn's weekend on a sour note.
In the weekend that was, Brooklyn lost a home-ice back breaker in over-time last Thursday to the Vermont Wild in the first ever meeting between the two teams.
Goalie Peter Dundovich entered the Vermont game in relief of Thomas Lee. And Coach rewarded Peter's effort by giving him the rest of the weekend. Dundovich made both starts against Cape Cod and Danbury.
During the Friday Night Fight in Hyannis against the Cape Cod Blue Fins, a hockey game still managed to break out. And after all the pleasantries, punches, and penalties to both teams, Brooklyn still posted a 6-1 drubbing of the Fins.
Then of course, there was Saturday night's close game, but a loss none-the-less, against Danbury on our home-ice which didn't nearly resemble the whooping we put on the Whalers last weekend.
Brooklyn's portion of the FHL's Week Three schedule is done. The Aviators went 1-1-1 this weekend. They are now 3-2-3 for the season, good for twelve points and fourth place as of Sunday night. They are one of the top four teams in the standings with double digit points.
The A's have a quick turn around this week. For Week Four, Brooklyn takes on the Whalers in Danbury this Wednesday night. They get a day off and host Cape Cod on Friday. Then Saturday, the Danville Dashers, another of the FHL's expansion teams, will make their Flatbush Avenue debut.

BKN Aviators ~ Road Rage in Cape Cod; Danbury Tonight

BROOKLYN AVIATORS: A Hockey Game Broke-Out During the Cape Cod Friday Night Fights.
After suffering two over-time losses in two meetings against the Cape Cod Blue Fins this season, the A's finally exacted a measure of road rage Friday night. In meeting number three, Brooklyn won convincingly by a score of 6-1 up in Hyannis, Mass. The win also snapped a two game losing streak and comes on the heals of an over-time loss to Vermont on Thursday.
After making a relief appearance in Thursday night's game, Coach Miller gave goalie Peter Dundovich the start in Cape Cod. And he did not disappoint. He faced fifty-one shots and stopped fifty to secure his first victory of the season. The game was a much needed confidence builder for Brooklyn's back-up goalie that will no doubt earn him more starts in the coming weeks.
Vladimir Nikiforov scored in the first period. KC Timmons and Jordan Bernier added goals in the second period. Chris Ferazzoli took care of everything else. He scored a goal in each period; two on the power play, and one at even strength for a hat trick.
That's the way the game turned out. But this is what really happened.
I guess after two previous hotly contested games against each other, the two teams may have already had enough of each other and perhaps wanted to express themselves a little bit because the game got chippy quite early. The first period was an exchange of trips, roughing and slashes. But by the second period, sportsmanship took a back seat as play really degenerated. First period slashing and roughing turned into second period Fighting; Boarding; Instigating; Misconducts; and Third-Man-In majors.
All that good will towards each other carried over into the third period as they acted out this time with another Unsportsmanlike penalty, more trips and cross-checks too.
In total, Brooklyn was arraigned on sixteen counts of thuggery worth forty-nine minutes, while Cape Cod was charged with thirteen violations and fifty-one minutes of punk time.
What a great win!
So while Brooklyn's blood is still boiling, it seems like a perfect time to take on our chief rival; Danbury Whalers; tonight in The Hangar and see if we can finally secure our first home-ice win of the season.
Yeah!
