Warriors win series three games to one.

Don't let the scoreboard fool you.  This wasn't another third period barrage that did in the A's.  This was just one of those things.  You have to pull the goalie when the situation is dire.  A coach who doesn't gets fired for not coaching.  The problem is, the New York Aviators got burned twice by the move late in the third period while trying to come back from a 3-2 deficit. 

What the A's will probably rue most is giving up a power play goal at 5:01 of the third period after John Goffredo got whistled for hooking.  With only four seconds to go for a successful penalty kill, Akwesasne's Miguel Delisle scored a back breaking goal which is what really did the Aviators in last night.  Delisle's goal made the score 3-1 in favor of the Warriors with one second short of fifteen minutes left remaining in regulation time. 

Now down by two, Michael Thomson scored (assisted by Matthew Puntureri; Nick Vandenbeld) to get the Aviators within a goal again.  They still had over half of the third period left to try and muster one more goal for a tie.  They peppered Warrior's goalie, David Plouffe, with 18 of their 38 shots on goal in the third period.  But then it started getting a little too late for the A's and trying to score the conventional way.  At 18:55, Akwesasne scored the first of two goals after New York pulled goalie Kevin Druce in favor of the extra skater.  Two empty net goals made the final score 5-2 in favor of the team from Canada.

These two teams finished one and two in the regular season.  The Aviators needed a ferocious finish to place first in the standings and ended the season with a 32-13-3 record and 66 points.  Akwesasne finished in second place with a 30-16-1 record and 61 points.

During the playoffs, the Akwesasne Warriors played perfect hockey on the road skating their way to a 4-0 record as visitors.   Today, they are the Federal Hockey League's inaugural season champions.  They win the series in convincing fashion; three games to one.

NEW YORK AVIATORS:  A's Gain Life In Game Three.  Will Try And Tie Series Tonight.  A Deciding Game Five Would Be Played In Brooklyn.

Throughout these playoffs, the big period has undone or propelled all participating teams.  This series has been no different.  Last night, the New York Aviators rode a big second period to victory over the Akwesasne Warriors and are now officially back in this series.  Although the A's are still down two games to one.  A victory tonight by the Aviators would tie this series and bring it back to Brooklyn for a Game Five Show-Down Monday night at the Hangar where the FHL will finally crown a champion.

Last night in Ontario, Canada - The Aviators opened up the scoring when Casey Mignone (assisted by Warren Galloway; Angelo Serse) scored four and a half minutes into the game.  At the 12:47 mark, Akwesasne tied the score 1-1 and that's the way the period would end.

Andrew Scampoli put the Aviators up by a goal again at 7:39 (assisted by KC Timmons) of the second period.  Then at 9:22, KC Timmons got called for a hooking penalty that the Warriors cashed in on with a power play goal at the 10:12 mark.

At 10:25, the Aviators struck right back with the first of three unanswered goals they'd score to close out the second period.  John Goffredo's goal (assisted by Andrew Scampoli; Jesse Felten) put New York up 3-2.  At 13:34 N.Y.'s Nicholas Kuqali got whistled for a holding penalty.  On the ensuing penalty kill, A's Nick Vandelbeld scored a pick-me-up, unassisted, shorthanded goal for the visiting team, which put them up 4-2.  And at 15:54, Angelo Serse gave the Aviators a 5-2 lead (assisted by Stephen Obelnicki) they'd take into the second intermission.

Half way through the final period, Akwesasne closed the score to 5-3.  But that's as close as they would get.  The New York Aviators sealed the game when Stephen Obelnicki scored, unassisted, on an empty Warrior's net.

A's goalie Kevin Druce faced 42 shots and stopped 39 of them.  He reversed the trend of the last two games when Akwesasne turned the third period into their personal skating sessions and mounting comebacks.  Seventeen of Akwesasne's forty-two shots on goal came in the third period.  On this night, Kevin Druce stayed solid and has given the Aviators life.

The final score of 6-3 says the skaters from Brooklyn are indeed alive and well.  A win tonight and the series comes back to the Borough of Kings for a decisive Game Five.

New York Aviators: Must Win Tonight! 

As Kevin Druce goes, so shall the Aviators go.  In both games of this series, after establishing early leads, the third period has proven to be the team's achilles heel.  Akwesasne's secret success however, has been their 4-0 record on the road through two rounds of playoffs.  As a result, they are in position to win this year's FHL Title tonight.  They'll have two chances to win one game on home-ice and clinch a championship.  Meanwhile, the Aviators are faced with having to sweep the next three games.  If they manage to win the next two games, they will come back to Hangar #5 in Brooklyn for a series finale.

After the first period, the Aviators led 3-1 in Game One.  But Akwesasne came back to hand New York a 4-3 loss.  In game two, Jesse Felten kept the A's ahead for the first two periods; recording a goal in each session.  The Akwesasne Warriors then exploded for 6 third period goals.  The Aviators managed two more goals but lost 6-4.

They now face elimination in Game Three. 

Bring the series back home.  Let's Go Aviators!!!

As of Sunday, March 20 ~ GAME TWO:

For the first two periods, Jesse Felten kept the A's confident they'd be heading to Ontario, Canada for the next phase of this series tied at one game apiece having dropped Game One Saturday.  After the first period, the Aviators led after Felten scored at the 8:39 mark (assisted by Michael Thomson).  A little past the midway point of the second period, Jesse Felten scored his, and the Aviators second goal of the game (assisted by John Goffredo at 10:41) making the score 2-0 after two periods.

Then as if flying over the Bermuda Triangle, our Aviators' gauges went wacky; our compass spun out of control; and we lost all direction.  After four and a half minutes into the third period, the Warriors unleashed a five minute assault that overwhelmed the A's.

An Akwesasne goal at the 4:35 mark started them on the war path.  Seventeen seconds later this game was tied at two.  Two minutes and fifty-four seconds after that, Akwesasne's Amhed Mahfouz scored his second goal of the period to give the Warriors their first lead at 3-2.  And Akwasasne's Pierre Dagenais, not wanting to be out-done scored his second goal of the game at the 8:13 mark to make it 4-2

The dueling Akwesasne forwards were not done yet.  At 9:49, Amhed Mahfouz completed the natural hat-trick with his third goal of the period.  Michael Thomson (assisted by Matthew Puntureri; KC Timmons) managed to get a goal back for the Aviators on the power play to make the score 5-3 in favor of the visitors.  But then, you kind of sensed it coming, Warrior Pierre Dagenais equalled his teammates feat with a natural hat-trick of his own scoring at the 12:12 mark to up their lead to 6-3.

With a half minute left in the game, Andrew Scampoli scored (assisted by Nick Vandenbeld; Michael Thomson) to make the score a bit more respectable.  But the New York Aviators would lose 6-4 and go down in the Federal Hockey League's Championship Series 2-0.

The shots-on-goal totals were even for the teams at twenty-eight apiece; a manageable number.  But for the second game in a row, Kevin Druce had trouble protecting a third period lead.  This time he was knocked out of the box and replaced by Peter Dundovich who finished the last half of the final period.

The best three out of five series moves to Akwesasne, Ontario.  The Aviators need to win the next two games to bring this series back home to Brooklyn for a Game Five.

Game One of the Federal Hockey League Championship Series goes to the Warriors from Ontario, Canada.

They strike first blood in the best three out of five series and have assured themselves a split on the road.

Before the first minute ticked off the clock after the opening face-off, the A's found themselves down 1-0 off a quick Akwesasne strike.  But the Aviators owned the final nineteen minutes and thirty one seconds of the first period.  They answered back with three goals in the period with two coming on the power play.

Casey Mignone (assisted by Nick Grove; Stephen Obelnicki) got the Aviators on the scoreboard at the 4:38 mark to tie things up.  The Warriors committed three penalties in the first period and New York converted on two of the opportunities.  At 5:52, the Warriors got called for a holding penalty, and seven seconds later, Matthew Puntureri put the A's ahead 2-1 (assisted by Michael Thomson; KC Timmons).  At 13:37, the Warriors were whistled for their third penalty of the period.  It was Akwesasne's Chad Bazin's second penalty infraction within the space of four minutes.  The first cross-checking minor was killed off.  His second whistle for hooking cost the Warriors when Andrew Scampoli scored at the 13:47 mark (assisted by Michael Thomson; KC Timmons) for a 3-1 Aviator lead they'd take into the first intermission.

The Warriors would put New York on the power play three more times in the second period.  But the A's went 0-3 and Akwesasne went 0-2 in their chances with the man-advantage.  At 15:06 of the second period, the Warriors scored an even strength goal to cut the Aviator lead to one.

Within the first five minutes of the third period, the Akwesasne Warriors struck for two more goals the Aviators never found a way to recover from over the last fifteen minutes of the game.  At the 2:09 mark, the Warriors tied the game on an even strength goal.

What ultimately downed the A's was a Nick Grove roughing penalty called at the 3:31 mark which the Warriors capitalized on thirty-seven seconds later with their fourth goal of the night.

New York had more shots-on-goal; 30-24.  But after the first period, they went 0-5 on the power play.  They never could find a way to score again over the last forty minutes as Akwesasne continued to chip away.

New York will get another chance to win a game in front of their home crowd in Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon before the series shifts to Akwesane next weekend.  If the series gets extended to five games, that deciding game will be here in Hangar #5.

The Brooklyn Sports Scene: The New Lords of Flatbush!

FLATBUSH AVENUE is Boulevard of the Fans Once Again!



Downtown Brooklyn's own..., The LIU (Long Island University) BLACKBIRDS Men's Basketball team; The Hoops Of Flatbush; - won their conference regular season title.  They reaffirmed themselves shortly thereafter by winning the NEC Title - Northeastern Conference Tournament.  As reward for their efforts this season, they were awarded an NCAA berth to the tournament we traditionally call March Madness; qualifying with a 27-5 mark.  Their travels will take them to Charlotte where they will take on the famed program of the North Carolina Tar Heels to be played this coming Friday night.  It will be the Blackbirds first NCAA Tourney appearance since 1997 and the third in their history.  The Blackbirds feel as if they could have been shown a little more respect than they received after being seeded 15th in the bracket.  But it is what it is Boys.  Their first round opponent, North Carolina is ranked #2 in their bracket.  The fans in Brooklyn have no doubt these boys will represent the Borough of Kings well.  Good luck to them.

This Saturday night, on the opposite end of Flatbush Avenue from where LUI's campus is, Brooklyn's Professional Hockey Team; the The New York Aviators will play Game One of the Federal Hockey League's Inaugural Championship Series in Hangar #5 over in Floyd Bennett Field against the Akwesasne Warriors.  The A's stumbled early to start the season but finished their campaign with a consecutive games winning streak that exceeded twenty games before getting it snapped by Danbury just before season's end.  In the first round of the Southern Division playoffs, The Aviators exacted a revenge of sorts and dispatched the Danbury Whalers in 5 games to earn a spot in the up-coming Finals.  Should the Aviators defeat the Akwesasne Warriors in the Inaugural FHL Finals, it would be the Aviators second consecutive championship in successive Leagues.

Between LIU's campus on Flatbush' north end, and Aviator's Hangar #5 on Flatbush' south end, where Atlantic Avenue and Flatbush Avenue intersect, construction of the Barclays Center has just celebrated it's one-year anniversary since Groundbreaking Day.  Work on the arena is accompanied by encouraging reports the project is ahead of schedule.  This arena will be home for the soon to be relocated New Jersey Nets Basketball Club.  For the moment the team plays in nearby Newark, N.J.  But the plan is for the Nets to tip-off their first home game in their new Brooklyn arena in time for the 2012-2013 season.  It's been a long seven years since Bruce Ratner purchased the New Jersey Nets and announced his intention to move the team to Brooklyn.  Mikhail Prokhorov arrived on the Nets scene since then but the point here is finally, a trip past the construction site today leaves little doubt as to the inevitability that a Major Professional Sports Franchise is returning to Brooklyn for the first time since the late 1950's when the Dodgers left the Borough to go play their games in California.

Duke Snider; The Duke of Flatbush; recently passed away.  The great Brooklyn Dodger center-fielder during NYC's Golden Era of Baseball was the last living member of the famed batting order that helped win the Dodgers their first title in 1955 and gave the Borough of Brooklyn their only World Series Championship.  Fifty-five years have passed since the denizens of Brooklyn danced in the streets in celebration of their Bums winning it all.  NEXT YEAR finally became NOW and the victory parade drove down Flatbush Avenue; Brooklyn's Heart.  And fortunately, I know enough of the ones who are still around who remember.  I'm always available anytime they want to tell me a story.


And as it concerns the game of Baseball, this much is undeniable; - From Dem Bums of yore to our Baby Bums of today;  Baseball, since the game's infancy, is uniquely a Brooklyn institution.  For it is in Brooklyn, Baseball spent it's childhood in the 1800's and grew to become great.  From here, it spread forth throughout the land to capture a Nation's heart.  The deeper you dig into Baseball's past and origins, the closer you get to Brooklyn.

Then, a decade ago, Baseball returned to it's roots.  It's a minor league brand of baseball, but the passion I have for my hometown team is of major intensity.  This last summer, local fans of the Surf Avenue Sluggers celebrated their 10th Anniversary together with Brooklyn's "Newest" Professional Baseball Team; the Brooklyn Cyclones. Our Baby Bums excited sold-out crowds with another thrilling season by the seashore which culminated in the team's fourth Division Title and an appearance in the Championship Finals.

With most of the bad days of Winter behind us, that can only mean my Brooklyn Cyclones' brochure and ticket plans should be arriving in my mailbox any day now.  When June rolls around, a new season with our Sluggers by the Sea will kick-off another summer of Coney Island fun.  Heading into our 11th season together, Brooklynites will continue to pack the park and set attendance records like we always have.

The same I think can be said for the future of Barclays Center and the Brooklyn Nets of 2012 and beyond.  I think the N.Y. Knickerbockers and many in the local Media are underestimating the passion level for a Professional Sports team, not in just what still remains as the 4th largest city in America, but in an only, one of a kind, wholly unique place like Brooklyn.

The Brooklyn Nets are setting up shop on Flatbush Avenue where Walter O'Malley once wanted to build a new stadium for the Dodgers.  But this isn't about rehashing the past and maddeningly crying over spilt milk.  Instead this is a conversation as well as a celebration I'm having with the Brooklyn Sports Fan out there.  This may not be the Golden Age of the 1950's, so you'll have to use your imagination a little and stretch reality to conform what I'm saying into something I believe is in it's genesis.  If you're like me, a born and bred Brooklynite who refuses to leave because I love it here so much, you must recognize the changes happening all around.  And if you're a sports fan, how can you not take notice to the fact that Flatbush Avenue has again become our Borough's Boulevard of the Fan.

On the north end of Flatbush Avenue at DeKalb Avenue, Long Island University, home of the Blackbirds, are the first to greet travelers crossing over the Manhattan Bridge.  Travelling south along Flatbush through Downtown Brooklyn, at Atlantic Avenue, the future home of the Nets Basketball Club is being assembled.  Then down on the south end of Flatbush Avenue is Floyd Bennett Field, where in Hangar #5,  the New York Aviators will begin playing for their League's Championship this weekend.

But no, ultimately, I'm not trying to call Brooklyn a sports town.  I'm not talking to anyone not from here because my championing of a pair of minor league outfits; a basketball team that isn't here yet; and a college team I know many won't admit they never heard of before..., is ludicrous.

But to you; my neighbor and fellow Brooklynite; We who care as little about Manhattan as Mayor Bloomberg does about us - Are you a Sports Fan?  Are you feeling the heat I'm generating regarding our local teams?

Yea.  This IS a Sports Town; our sports town within a sports town.  These are the days; for us at least.  I wrote somewhere in another post... Don't wait for the Media naysayers to write a book ten years from now and have them say I was there when Brooklyn....blah blah.  Forget them because they all cater to each other and to their egos and quite frankly, just don't get it (meaning Bklyn).  Just pay attention for yourselves and go to a game or two.  We're taking baby steps but Brooklyn never had these options and multitude of teams available to us before.  So write the story for yourselves about how Brooklyn is reappearing on the sporting map.  We're on the ground floor looking in.

N.Y. AVIATORS ~ Game 5; Beat Danbury in OT - Reach FHL Finals

NEW YORK AVIATORS:  The Coolest Guys In Brooklyn win Round One Clincher in Over-Time.

Game One of FHL Finals at Hangar #5 next Friday night!


The Federal League's Southern Division playoff series came down to a final Game Five.  The Aviators and Danbury Whalers split the first two games in Brooklyn then split the next two in Danbury.  Today, the deciding Game Five was played in Brooklyn's Hangar #5 at Floyd Bennett Field.   But when regulation time expired, we still had no winner.  Overtime would be needed to decide which team would take on the Akwesasne Warriors for the Federal League's Inaugural Championship.

In a game played by Danbury with far more discipline than Saturday's Game Four penalty riddled affair, it was an Aviator this time who was ejected from this contest for poor usage of his stick.  With less than two minutes remaining in regulation time, N.Y.'s John Goffredo was a assessed a four minute double-minor for high-sticking and given the obligatory ten minute major with the accompanying ejection.  Otherwise, both teams kept the penalty count respectable.

NY's Christopher Holmes started this afternoon's scoring with a goal (assisted by Angelo Serse; Anthony Longo) at the 9:02 mark of the first period.  But two minutes later, Danbury's Chris Seifert tied the score at the 11:04 mark.  That's the way the first period would end.  New York had fifteen shots-on-goal to the Whalers' eight.  New York was 0 for 1 on the PP.

To start the second period, the home ice crowd watched their A's jump out to another lead when Matthew Puntureri scored at the 2:09 mark (assisted by Jesse Felten; Jarrett Rush).  But the Danbury Whalers had other ideas for the crowd.  They answered back quickly to bring silence among Hangar #5's rooters.  At 3:42, Matt Caranci scored to tie the score at two apiece.  Then slightly more than a minute later, Chris Seifert would put the Whalers ahead for the first time in this game.  Both teams committed three penalties each and went a combined 0-6 on their respective power plays during the second period.

Danbury held on to their 3-2 lead beyond the half way point of the third period.  But at the 13:13 mark, New York's Nick Grove (assisted by Jesse Felten; Nick Vandenbeld) scored to get the game tied again.  And that's the way regulation time would end; tied 3-3.

After the regular season and a full five games during the first round playoff, it still wasn't enough to decide a Southern Division participant for the Championship Series.

So to overtime they went.  It would be the second time these teams would wind up in overtime this series.  But The Coolest Guys In Brooklyn didn't make their fans wait too long for this series to reach it's conclusion.  They gave the Brooklyn fans their moment of jubilation at the 3:56 mark of the extra period.  Fittingly, it was Aviator favorite Matthew Puntureri (assisted by Jesse Felten) who netted home the game winning goal for Brooklyn's skaters.  It was his second and obviously the more dramatic goal of the game for Matthew. 

In the end, the final score on the big red scoreboard at the Hangar would read Aviators 4;  Danbury Whalers 3.  The A's, Brooklyn's Pro Hockey team, would be heading to the Championship Series versus the Akwesasne Warriors.

N.Y. AVIATORS ~ Face Must Win Tonight In Danbury; Game Four

NEW YORK AVIATORS:  The Coolest Guys In Brooklyn Are Skating On Thin Ice.  Must Win To Avoid Elimination.


A deciding Game Five can be played in Brooklyn with a win today in Danbury.

After splitting the first two games of the Southern Division playoffs against the Danbury Whalers in Brooklyn, the New York Aviators find themselves in a must-win situation today after a crushing O.T. defeat last night in Game Three played in front of 2,900-plus Danbury fans.

Chris Seifert of the Danbury Whalers scored his second goal of the game with 11:31 left in over-time (FHL - 20 minute O.T.) to break a 2-2 tie and push the Whalers one win closer to a meeting with the Akwesasne Warriors to decide the Federal Hockey League's 2011 Championship.  Back in the second period, Chris Seifert scored his first goal to tie the score at one apiece. 

In the Northern Division, the Akwesasne Warriors did away with the 1000 Island Privateers three games to one and sit waiting to take on the winner of the Southern series.

Should the Coolest Guys in Brooklyn pull out a win today in Danbury and tie the series again at two games apiece, the deciding fifth game will be played Sunday - March 13, 2011 at 3:05pm back at Hangar #5 in Brooklyn.

NEW YORK AVIATORS:

First Round Playoff Series; Tied 1-1

After winding down the inaugural season of the Federal Hockey League with a most furious 21 game winning streak, the coolest guys in Brooklyn are currently tied at one game apiece with the Danbury Whalers in the first round of the FHL Playoffs.

With the Aviators outstanding finish, they recorded  32-13-2 record and were able to over-take Akwesasne for first place in the Federal Hockey League's first season of operation.  The Aviators first round opponent, the Danbury Whalers finished the season in fourth place with a record of 24-18-5.

After starting the series in Brooklyn and taking Game One, the Aviators dropped Game Two to Danbury at Hangar #5 in Floyd Bennett by a score of 5-2.  Games Three and Four will be played back in Danbury, Connecticut.  If Necessary, Game Five will be played at the Hangar on Sunday, March 13th.

N.Y. Aviators Out of the Clouds

I told you a little home cooking would do our Boyz fine. 

After "The Coolest Guys in Brooklyn" started the season 0-3, they stabilized going 2-2 over the next four games.  All seven games were on the road.  Now with Thursday night's victory over second place Danbury, the A's have a three game winning streak going away, with all three wins coming at home; their first three home games of the year.  They now go back on the road having corrected their faulty start.

They chipped their way out of last place and their ten points after ten games is now good for third place in the standings.  They've only given up 31 goals in 10 games which rates them second in the League in that category.

The Akwesasne Warriors still lead the Federal League with an 8-3 record.  They've practically doubled N.Y.'s offensive output scoring 60 goals thus far.  However the Aviators are sporting a tighter defense as the Warriors have allowed 45 goals against.

Scout out a good place to sit. 

Section 8 is right next to the player's entrance, the press box, and is near center ice.

Reach in pocket; take out money;

Buy reasonably priced ticket to Opening Night.

Secure a game program at the front desk.

Then stop and admire the Aviator Sports Center Trophy Case.

By then it will be time for pre-game introductions..

...and for you to rise and take off your hats for

the singing of our National Anthem.

Finally, time to drop the puck.

After a little of this and a little of that..

..the Barons jumped out to an early lead.

They took that lead into the locker room with them after the first period,

but not before THIS!

For you Zamboni Buffs out there..., here you are;

A Zamboni.

He did a good job, didn't he?

The AVIATORS came out for the Second Period...,

...kicked things up a couple of notches...,

..and started putting up their own numbers on the scoreboard.

Then, there was another one of THESE!

Once that was settled they played some more hockey.

And the Second Period ended with the Aviators leading 3-2.

During the Second Intermission,

we were entertained by The Human Slingshot.

The Aviators started the Third Period ahead 3-2.

But then, the game was delayed as the Refs had to make quick repairs

to the ice surface.

Which resulted in a whole lot of this..

..and this.

Once the ice was patched-up and play resumed, the Aviators scored two more times

increasing their lead 5-2.

The remaining time wound down and

The New York Aviators won their Brooklyn Home Ice Opener.

Then it got quiet and we all went home happy.

The "Coolest Guys in Brooklyn" haven't started the 2010-2011 season in the most spectacular fashion, wrestling with a 2-5 record.  They've been 'barnstorming' since October 29th when their season got under way.  Tonight, finally, they play their home ice opener in front of their eagerly waiting Brooklyn Rooters.  And maybe, being reunited with their fans is just what the Doctor ordered to get them started on a winning track.  They may be struggling at the moment but they already have shown a flair for the dramatic.  In their two wins, one came in overtime and the other victory was gained in shoot-out.

Matthew Puntureri leads the team with 6 goals.  Andrew Scampoli and Casey Mignone both have 4 goals apiece.  Center Jesse Felton leads the team in penalties with 27 minutes served.  Kevin Druce has started 6 of the 7 games in net for the Aviators.  He owns a .893% Save percentage and a 3.65 Goals Against Average.  He's allowed 22 goals while stopping 183.

The A's will remain home for four games; three against the Barons and one versus the Danbury Whalers.  The Akwesasne Warriors maintain an early lead in the Federal League with a 6-2 record while we find ourselves on the opposite end currently in last place.  Now that the schedule calls for some home games, this is where we balance things out.

Come out and cheer on the "Coolest Guys in Brooklyn" as we try and make this game the first of many we'll have plenty to cheer about.  Let's give these guys the ultimate Home Ice advantage and show the Federal League what playing hockey in Brooklyn is all about.
