Cyclones Lose Second Straight at Hudson Valley

Brooklyn got off to a good start.  Of course, it's how you finish that matters.

Left fielder Matt Rudick drew a walk to open the game, and Shervyen Newton was hit by a pitch.  Afterwhich, designated hitter Nic Gaddis delivered both runners with a home run to left field.

After two scoreless at-bats, the Renegades caught up to starter Mike Vasil with three hits and two runs in the third and another three hits and three runs, including a home run in the fourth.

Shervyen Newton doubled home a run in the fifth, and Mike Rudick homered in the top of the seventh to tie the game at five.

However, right-hander Nolan Clenney yielded three runs in the bottom half of the seventh.

Renegade reliever Ryan Miller won the game in relief of starter Matt Sauer, and Nelson Alvarez 

converted a five-out save.

Making his sixth start with the Cyclones, Mike Vasil escaped with a no-decision while Nolan Clenney took the loss.  

Four of the Cyclones' six hits went for extra bases, but they only drew two walks and struck out ten times.

Mike Vasil's earned run average continues to grow after posting a 1.80 mark in eight starts and 35.0 innings with St. Lucie.  He presently sports a 5.40 ERA through 28.1 innings since being promoted to Brooklyn.

Matt Sauer Pitches a Dandy; Renegades Claim First Win of Series

The Cyclones dropped a tightly contested pitcher's duel Thursday evening, and the Renegades claimed their first victory of the series.

Hudson Valley starter Matt Sauer was stellar, allowing just one run on three hits and no walks with nine strikeouts over 7.1 innings pitched for the win.  Right-hander Alex Mauricio yielded one hit and struck out three batters over the final 1.2 innings for his second save.

Brooklyn was limited to just four hits, a single by Wilmer Reyes, Rowdey Jordan, and Matt O'Neill each doubled, and right fielder Joe Suozzi homered in the sixth for Brooklyn's lone run of the game.  The Cyclones drew just one walk and struck out a dozen times as a team.

Starter Garrison Bryant surrendered two runs on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts through five innings pitched for the loss.

They say one good turn deserves another.  The first two games of the local New York Penn League season have treated us to an early pair of pitching gems.

Game One: Staten Island Opening Day Victory 

 A night after Yankees starter Matt Sauer stymied the Cyclones through six shut-out innings of no hit ball, Coney Island's 22-year old Briam Campusano on Saturday night matched Sauer's effort at MCU Park with his own whitewashing of Staten Island through six innings of no hit ball.

Brooklyn relievers Ezequiel Zabaleta and Mac Lozer joined to pitch three innings and fan four batters, and were unfortunately charged with allowing Staten Island's lone hit of the game in the seventh.

The Cyclones jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a double by first baseman Jose Brizuela and an RBI single by shortstop Manny Rodriguez.  Things stayed quiet until the Brooklyn half of the fifth when the Yankee bullpen suddenly imploded.  Jose Brizuela led off with a triple and scored on s base hit off the bat of catcher Carlos Sanchez.  Before long Brooklyn loaded the bases and as luck would have it, Cyclones designated hitter Kendall Coleman went deep to right for a grand slam home run.  With another run in the sixth, the Cyclones easily secured game two of their three game series by a 7-0 margin of victory.

The rubber game is scheduled for play back across the bridge at the Ballpark at St. George.
