Sherry Smith Steps Up With Three-Hitter; Series Shifts to Cleveland
Brooklyn again plays to their strengths, getting a fine pitching performance and more timely hitting. In fact, the Robins capitalize right away against Indians starter Ray Caldwell. Ivy Olson draws a walk leading off the first and Tommy Griffith reaches safely on an error by shortstop Joe Sewell. Zack Wheat and Hi Myers follow with consecutive hits plating two runs and the Robins never look back. Although, what should have been a Tris Speaker double down the left field line turns into a complete trip around the bases when Zack Wheat mishandles the play. However, Robins southpaw Sherry Smith quickly puts the Ebbets Field crowd back at ease. When Sherry retires the Indians in order in the ninth the Borough partisans roar with approval. Smith yields just one unearned run on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts through nine innings complete. Brooklyn leads the best of nine series two games to one as the series now shifts to Dunn Field at Cleveland.
