Rube Marquard Fends Off Giants; Brooklyn Extends First Place Lead Over Reds

Making up a postponement from April 28 the Robins take their second straight from the Giants, and notch their tenth win in their last eleven games.  Rube Marquard looks like his old self allowing the visitors two earned runs on nine hits and two walks with two strikeouts.  Facing New York's Fred Toney in the Brooklyn second Pete Kilduff triples home Tommy Griffith, then scores on Otto Miller's hit back up the middle for a 2-0 lead.  Otto Miller drives in Brooklyn's third run in the fourth with a double scoring Chuck Ward.  Tommy Griffith then caps off the Robins tallies with an RBI single in the fifth giving Brooklyn an eventual 4-2 final margin of victory.  Rube Marquard picks up his third victory with a declining 3.91 earned run average.  The Robins defeat the Giants for a fifth straight time and now own an 8-3 advantage in the season series.  They likewise increase their first place lead to 1.5 games over the Reds whom were idle this day.

  • RECORD: 26-15 (.634)
  • 1st place; 1.5 GA
