OTD 7/22/1906: The Brooklyn Royal Giants Outlast Cedarhurst at Bronx Oval

On Saturday, July 22, 1906, the Brooklyn Royal Giants held on in a tightly contested victory over the Cedarhurst semipros before 3,000 fans at Bronx Oval.

In a winning effort, Brooklyn's 20-years young Bill Merritt limits the Cedars to one run on seven hits (none for extra bases), six walks with six strikeouts, and a hit batsman for good measure.  Cedarhurst's first baseman, Zimmerman, spoils the shut out when he crosses the dish in the sixth.  

                

Hart, Merritt's counterpart, allows eight hits, but unlike the Cedars, three go for extra bases, and the Royal Giants make them count for two runs in the third and one insurance run in the fifth.  Shortstop  Grant Johnson wields two hits and scored a run, and third baseman Mike Brown also laces a pair of hits.  Left fielder Andrew Payne and center fielder James Robinson each strike for extra bases and account for Brooklyn's two other runs scored.  

OTD 6/22/1907: The Brooklyn Royal Giants Defeat Benton at Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania

On Saturday, June 22, 1907, the Brooklyn Royal Giants defeat the Benton nine at Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, roughly 165 miles away from Washington Park.

Starting for the Benton locals, Bombey yields seven runs on eleven hits.  All but Grant Johnson and left fielder John Patterson hit safely for Brooklyn.  Third baseman Bill Monroe, first baseman Bob Jordan, second baseman Gus James, and catching this game, Clarence Williams, all register two hits apiece.  Starting pitcher Bill Merritt also joins in the hit parade with two of his own and two runs scored.  Otherwise, Merritt allows five runs on ten hits in a winning effort.  Shortstop Grant Johnson registers a game-high eight assists, and first baseman Bob Jordan with a likewise game-high ten putouts.

On Saturday, June 8, 1907, the Brooklyn Royal Giants are defeated by the Philadelphia Giants at Washington Park, Fifth Avenue at Third Street.

Starting for Brooklyn, right-hander Harry Buckner is opposed by Philadelphia southpaw Danny McClellan.  The visitors jump out to an early lead when right fielder Sol White drives home left fielder Pete Hill.  Buckner and McClellan then trade zeroes through the fifth.  Philadelphia scores twice more in the sixth on runs batted in from center fielder Emmett Bowman and receiver Bruce Petway. Brooklyn center fielder Bill Merritt scored the Royal Giants' first run on a wild throw home in the sixth.  The teams traded runs in the eighth.  Bill Merritt made a leaping one-handed catch of Petway's drive to deep center field with one out and runners on the corners.  Shortstop John Henry Lloyd tagged up from third to score, giving Philadelphia a 4-1 advantage.  In the bottom half of the frame, Bill Merritt singles and scores on George "Chappie" Johnson's triple but is left stranded at third.  In the top of the ninth, Harry Buckner retires Philadelphia in order.  Brooklyn catcher Grant Johnson would cross the plate in the bottom half of the ninth, but the Royal Giants would score no more.  Harry Buckner surrenders four runs on 13 hits and three walks with five strikeouts in a losing effort.  His opponent Danny McClellan yields three runs on eight hits and four walks with four strikeouts.  The 1,800 fans in attendance at Washington Park rendered Bill Merritt an appreciative ovation for his fine play.
