Nearly a century ago, on Monday, June 16, 1924, Brooklyn plays the professional nine at Wilmington, Delaware.  The Royal Giants pay their first visit of the season to the Washington Potomacs.

In a clash of Eastern Colored League members, the Brooklyn Royal Giants outlast the Washington Potomacs in a tightly contested affair.  Brooklyn starts confidently, jumping out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first, then mustering four runs in the fifth.  Finally, they score what would prove to be a pivotal insurance run in the eighth.  That's because Washington rallies for four runs in their half of the eighth highlighted by Country Brown's home run.  The Potomac club pushes another run across the plate in the ninth to no avail.

Royal Giants starter Dick "Cannonball" Redding allows five runs on twelve hits and two walks with three strikeouts for the win.  Potomacs' catcher Fred Williams strokes a single and a double, and middle infielders Joe Goodrich and J.H. Hamilton also account for two hits apiece.

Washington starter Herbert Smith in a losing effort, yields six runs on ten hits and four walks with four strikeouts.  Playing first base this game, Brooklyn's John Cason leads the way with three hits, including a home run and three runs scored.  Redding helps his own cause with two hits and a run scored.

This is in commemoration of Brooklyn's (Cyclones) return to Wilmington, a city steeped in Negro Leagues' history.  On Tuesday, June 15, 2021, a professional team from Brooklyn once again takes the field in the city of Wilmington, Delaware.
