From the desk: FINGERPRINTS OF DEM BUMS
In baseball's sixth ever World Series clash of 1889, the National League New York Giants defeated the American Association champion Brooklyn Bridegrooms six games to three, and an inter-city rivalry was born. While this marked the New York Giants second straight championship victory over the Association, it would be Brooklyn's last campaign as an AA member club. The following season, the Bridegrooms would make their National League debut where they remain to this day. Welcome to "BEFORE the BUMS" my game-by-game rewind of (the city) Brooklyn's historic 1890 season.
Bridegrooms Win in Extra-Innings; Take Series from Beaneaters
Byrne's Bridegrooms continue to seize the day. Yet another tightly contested affair unfolded during Friday's finale. Brooklyn tallied in the first inning but the Beaneaters did well to minimize the damage. Second baseman Hub Collins singled and scored, but George Pinkney was thrown out at home and Dave Foutz got picked off second base to end the threat. The Bridegrooms added to their lead in the third when Collins tripled home catcher Bob Clark then scored on Pinkney's base hit back through the middle. However, their advantage was shortlived. Boston scored two runs in the bottom half of the third as a the result of a passed ball and wild pitch much to the dismay of manager McGunnigle, and tallied twice more before the inning was through. Both starting pitchers settled down and traded goose eggs through the sixth. In the top of the seventh, Bob Caruthers deposited a Kid Nichols offering over the right field fence, tying the score at four. The situation then remained unchanged through the ninth, and into extra innings they went at South End Grounds. With two outs in the the visitor's tenth, Oyster Burns doubled and Dave Foutz hit one back to the box. Kid Nichols fielded the ball cleanly but threw errantly to first base permitting Burns to score. After stealing second, Foutz then scored on Adonis Terry's hit to left, giving the Bridegrooms a 6-5 lead. Boston threatened in the bottom half of the frame. With one out and two runners in scoring position, Hub Collins caught a liner and beat the base runner back to second for a game-ending double play. Brooklyn takes the series two games to one.
