From the desk: FINGERPRINTS OF DEM BUMS
In baseball's sixth ever World Series clash of 1889, the National League New York Giants defeated the American Association champion Brooklyn Bridegrooms six games to three, and an inter-city rivalry was born. While this marked the New York Giants second straight championship victory over the Association, it would be Brooklyn's last campaign as an AA member club. The following season, the Bridegrooms would make their National League debut where they remain to this day. Welcome to "BEFORE the BUMS" my game-by-game rewind of (the city) Brooklyn's historic 1890 season.

WASHINGTON PARK
Pinkney and Burns Power Bridegrooms Over Pittsburgh
Back home at Washington Park, Byrne's sluggers got to work right away against the former Louisville great now twirling for Pittsburgh, right-hander Guy Hecker, who yielded four runs in the first inning, including a Tom Daly home run. The score remained unchanged through the fourth. Facing Tom Lovett, Pittsburgh tallied three times in the top of the fifth, reducing their deficit to one. However, their confidence was broken when George Pinkney wielded a two-run home run in the bottom half of the frame, and Oyster Burns followed with a solo shot. Tom Lovett then held Pittsburgh scoreless over the final four innings to gain his eighteenth win this season against six losses.

Friday, August 1, 1890 (GAME TWO)
WASHINGTON PARK
Bridegrooms Pummel Alleghenys, Sweep Twin Bill
A series of infield and battery errors along with six hits by the Bridegrooms resulted in an 11-1 score after just the first inning. Right-hander Adonis Terry and Dave Foutz took care of the rest. They traded places in the third. Terry allowed three hits, while Foutz limited the Alleghenys to one hit the rest of the way with three strikeouts. However, Byrne's sluggers were not yet done. They would go on to post ten more runs. With the arrival of rain drops, umpires suspended the game after the eighth. George Pinkney and Oyster Burns again led the 'Grooms with two more home runs, accounting for seven of their fourteen hits and eight runs scored. This marks the second time Brooklyn has achieved twenty runs in a non-extra inning contest this season and have scored double-digit runs four times in their last six games. Brooklyn scored no less than fifteen runs in a nine-inning game for the tenth time. The National League's top scoring team has 53 more runs than the next closest team, Philadelphia Phillies, which the Bridegrooms now trail in the standings by one game.
