From the desk: FINGERPRINTS OF DEM BUMS
In baseball's sixth ever World Series clash of 1889, the National League New York Giants defeated the American Association champion Brooklyn Bridegrooms six games to three, and an inter-city rivalry was born. While this marked the New York Giants second straight championship victory over the Association, it would be Brooklyn's last campaign as an AA member club. The following season, the Bridegrooms would make their National League debut where they remain to this day. Welcome to "BEFORE the BUMS" my game-by-game rewind of (the city) Brooklyn's historic 1890 season.

Bridegrooms Fend Off Pirates
The morning game at Recreation Park quickly turned into a rude wake-up call for the more than 1,000 fans present. Brooklyn had built a seemingly insurmountable 10-2 lead after just four innings. But with Bob Caruthers on the hill, Pittsburgh erupted for eight runs in the fifth, tying the game at ten. However, the uproarious crowd was again muted when Brooklyn moved ahead with a run in the sixth. Afterwhich, the score remained unchanged. Second baseman Hub Collins wielded three hits and scored three runs. The victory snapped Brooklyn's three-game losing skid.

Brooklyn Completes Twin Bill Sweep
Brooklyn wrapped up their Western tour with a second straight victory over the Alleghenys. After trading single runs in the first, the Bridegrooms tallied in the third and twice more in the fourth, proving decisive. The score remained unchanged until the eighth, when Brooklyn added one run, and Pittsburgh answered with a pair but failed to alter the outcome. Bridegroom starter Adonis Terry allowed seven hits and six walks with three strikeouts in a winning effort. With additional stops at Cleveland, Cleveland, and Cincinnati, the Bridegrooms wrap up their Western tour at par with an even 7-7 record and return home in third place.
