In baseball's sixth ever World Series clash of 1889, the National League New York Giants defeated the American Association champion Brooklyn Bridegrooms six games to three, and an inter-city rivalry was born. While this marked the New York Giants second straight championship victory over the Association, it would be Brooklyn's last campaign as an AA member club. The following season, the Bridegrooms would make their National League debut where they remain to this day. Foutz Home Run Lifts 'Grooms in Rubber Game Against Colts
The Bridegrooms rebounded from Tuesday's loss to defeat the Colts and capture the series two games to one. Starter Tom Lovett proved unsolvable, holding Chicago scoreless through the seventh. He then allowed two runs in the eighth on just four total hits, none by Cap Anson, and three walks with seven strikeouts for the win. It was Lovett's fifteenth victory against six losses. First baseman Dave Foutz's two-run home run to center field highlighted a five-run third inning for Brooklyn. Right fielder Oyster Burns knocked home two runs, and Lovett helped himself with a hit, a run batted in, and a run scored. With Patsy Donovan and Bob Caruthers scratched after yesterday's collision, Mr. McGunnigle forced into action Pop Corkhill who, despite an injured shoulder, wielded two hits with one run batted in.
