From the desk: FINGERPRINTS OF DEM BUMS
In baseball's sixth ever World Series clash of 1889, the National League New York Giants defeated the American Association champion Brooklyn Bridegrooms six games to three, and an inter-city rivalry was born. While this marked New York's second straight championship victory over the Association, it would be Brooklyn's last as an AA member club. The following season, the Bridegrooms would make their National League debut. Welcome to "BEFORE the BUMS" my game-by-game rewind of (the city) Brooklyn's historic 1890 season.
Billy Rhines Twirls Two-Hitter
Game two at League Park featured Brooklyn's Tom Lovett against right-hander Billy Rhines for the Reds. After two scoreless innings, veteran second baseman Bid McPhee delivered home the game's first run in the third. The score remained unchanged through the seventh inning. Left fielder Joe Knight connected off Lovett for a two-run home run in the eighth. The Bridegrooms never mustered a response as Billy Rhines limited Brooklyn to just two hits and one walk with three strikeouts for the shutout victory. This marks only the second game this season in which the Bridegrooms have been held scoreless. Tom Lovett allowed ten hits and two walks in the loss. Brooklyn now falls back into third place behind Cincinnati and Philadelphia.
