In baseball's sixth ever World Series clash of 1889, the National League New York Giants defeated the American Association champion Brooklyn Bridegrooms six games to three, and an intra-city rivalry was born. While this marked New York's second straight championship victory over the Association, it would be Brooklyn's last as an AA member club. Beaneaters Give Bridegrooms Rude Welcome; Brooklyn Loses First-Ever National League Contest
Like many a hungover bridegroom, last year's American Association champions trip over themselves while making a rather inauspicious National League debut at Boston. Brooklyn promptly takes a 3-0 lead with two runs in the first inning and one in the second. But with former 40-game winner Bob Caruthers hurling for the Bridegrooms, Boston erupts for eight runs in the top of the third. Brooklyn again pounces on John Clarkson's offerings to retake a 9-8 lead during the bottom half of the frame, but their batting proficiency would end there. The Beaneaters score seven more unanswered runs en route to a 15-9 victory before 3,882 contented fans at South End Grounds. Boston shortstop Herman Long connected on two home runs. Brooklyn's first baseman Dave Foutz and second sacker Hub Collins wielded extra-base hits.
