OTD Negro National League 7/13/1935: Brooklyn Eagles and Pittsburgh Crawfords Split Twin Bill at Ebbets Fields

From the desk: WHERE THE EAGLES LEARNED TO FLY

On Saturday, July 13, 1935, in a Negro National League contest, the Brooklyn Eagles and Pittsburgh Crawfords split games of a doubleheader at Ebbets Field.

GAME ONE - Crawford right-hander Roosevelt Davis limits the Eagles to three runs on just six hits and three walks with seven strikeouts for the win.  Brooklyn's first baseman George Giles poses the biggest threat going 2 for 4 with a double and home run.  The teams battle to a two-all tie through five, and Brooklyn even takes a one-run lead in the sixth on Giles' clout.  But Pittsburgh posts four runs in the eighth to knock Elbert Williams out of the box and put the game out of reach.  The Crawfords score once more in the top of the ninth for good measure.  Elbert Williams walks two and strikes out two in a losing effort.  Left-hander Otis Starks closes out the game in relief of Williams.  Left fielder and native New Yorker Fats Jenkins bats 1 for 4 with a stolen base and a run scored.
  • FINAL: PITT 7; BRK 3

GAME TWO: Despite opening the scoring in the second, Pittsburgh overtakes Brooklyn with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth for a 3-1 lead.  However, the Eagles answered with three runs in the sixth, and starter Leon Day makes them stand, closing out the game with three scoreless innings for the win.  All told, Leon Day yields three runs on seven hits and one walk with five strikeouts and a hit batsman for good measure.  Pittsburgh's Jimmy Crutchfield is 2 for 5 with a double, stolen base, and run scored, center fielder Cool Papa Bell goes 2 for 4 with a triple, stolen base, and run scored, and Judy Johnson hits safely in both games.  Brooklyn's George Giles once again poses a threat, this time to Crawford starter Bill Harvey with two hits and a run scored.  Otherwise, Harvey yields only five hits and four walks in losing effort.
  • FINAL: PITT 3; BRK 4
