Burleigh Grimes Whitewashes Cleveland; Outperforms Jim Bagby
To the great relief of an entire Borough, the Robins knot the World Series at a game apiece. Facing baseball's winningest pitcher with 31 victories, Brooklyn opens the scoring with haste against Cleveland right-hander Jim Bagby. In the first inning Jimmy Johnston reaches on a one out single and scores on Zack Wheat's line drive double to center. Starter Burleigh Grimes singles leading off the third and comes around to score on a double by Tommy Griffith. In the fifth, Griffith's base hit delivers home Ivy Olson from second base for a 3-0 Robins lead. Burleigh Grimes takes care of the rest. Outperforming Jim Bagby, the spitballer yields seven hits and four walks over nine shutout innings. Tris Speaker accounts for two of the Indians hits.
