Rube Marquard Out-Duels Boston Braves; Robins Win Fourth Straight
Sunday's game further confirms Rube Marquard can still be great when the Robins need him most. The soon to be 33-year old southpaw yields just one run in the second inning then whitewashes Boston the rest of the way. Tommy Griffith's sacrifice fly in the first opens the scoring. Who else but Rabbit Maranville ties the score in the second. But the Braves would score no more. Zack Wheat drives home the go ahead run in the fourth and Marquard takes care of the rest. Jimmy Johnston continues rewarding Uncle Robbie's decision to start him this season at third base with two hits and .292 batting average. Marquard improves to 9-7 with a 3.16 ERA, allowing one run on four hits and no walks with five strikeouts. It's Brooklyn's fourth win in a row. However, the Reds and Giants cede no ground. Cincinnati is victorious at St. Louis and the New York Giants trounce the Phillies at the Polo Grounds.
