New York Giants: Jerry Reese's Last Stand

From the desk of:  DO IT FOR THE DUKE

Year of the Reese

New York Football Giants: Jerry Reese's Turn to Sink or Swim.

The Giants own a sub par 28-36 record over the four years since winning Super Bowl XLVI.

They're no doubt seeking to snap a streak of three consecutive losing seasons since going 9-7 during their Super Bowl follow up.  It's been roughly 35 years since the Giants last strung together this many losing campaigns.  Back in 1981, Ray Perkins finally put an end to eight straight losing seasons with the ever temperamental 9-7 record.

The Giants are additionally coming off back-to-back 6-10 seasons.  They have not suffered back-to-back seasons of double-digit losses since Jim Fassel's last stand in 2003 and Tom Coughlin's first year in 2004.

There have been ramifications for all this losing.  Since winning their last Lombardi Trophy, the Giants have jettisoned two defensive coordinators, one offensive coordinator, and a future HOF head coach.

This means all eyes will be on Jerry Reese.  Under him, the Giants have strayed from their traditional core values of strong defense and a ball control running game.  Rather, the running game is non existent, while the defense has allowed in excess of 400 points in each of the last two seasons.

Jerry Reese, then, is next on the chopping block.  He knows it.  Mr. Mara knows it.  And fans know it.
By season's end, John Mara in turn will be faced with a potentially team altering decision.

Will the Giants continue forward with Jerry Reese as their general manager?

The 53 players he fields will ultimately decide.
