Newark Bears ~ CanAm League Opening Day

From the desk of:   THE BRICK CITY NINE

NEWARK BEARS:  Another Season of Brick City Baseball.

Newark Bears
CanAm League

The modern day Newark Bears Baseball Club enter their fifteenth season of Independent League play Thursday, and their second in the Canadian American League.

Ken Oberkfell comes to Newark from the Mets organization and replaces Tim Raines as the Field Manager.  Tim Raines is now the Director of Player Development.  Former MLB pitcher, John Citarella will serve as Pitching Coach.

Some familiar names returning from last season are pitchers Kyle Morrison and Anthony Pluta, catcher Billy Alvino, outfielder Burt Reynolds, and the ageless one, big Daryle Ward.

Overall, the Bears finished 41-52 in their first season in the CanAm League.  This year, the circuit will sport five teams.  They will play a one-hundred game schedule in conjunction with teams from the American Association.  The top two teams in the CanAm League will play in the post-season.  There will be no split season.

As per the original agreement with the American Association, the five team CanAm contingent was to travel to five AA towns and play ten games.  In return, five AA teams were to visit all five CanAm teams and play ten games.

That plan has been altered somewhat.  This is how the 2012 season breaks down.  The Bears will play ten games at home, and ten games on the road versus the Worcester Tornadoes, Rockland Boulders, and New Jersey Jackals.  They host Quebec ten times, but play in Canada eleven times.

In their AMERICAN ASSOCIATION games, the Bears will travel to:
Gary South Shore Rail Cats
Kansas City T-Bones
Grand Prairie Air Hogs - The 2011 American Association Champions

The Newark Bears will host:
Lincoln Saltdogs
St. Paul Saints
and the Kansas City T-Bones.
