LONG ISLAND DUCKS: The Search for Terra Firma; Even Webbed Feet Can't Help In Quicksand.
What the Quack is going on here?
The Ducks are swimming in quicksand and there's no one around to throw them a rope. Thus, down; down; down; go the spirits of many Duck Fans as their new dearth of pitching is starting to drown their quest for a Championship Season.
They have already clinched a pennant for their first-half efforts. Yes, they will be in the playoffs. But their prospects for success through the post-season grow more dim with every ineffective inning pitched by their impoverished rotation. Last night in York, another 6.1 innings pitched; another six earned runs allowed (by Dave Williams). And with that, another day of growing doubts regarding the rest of Long Island's tomorrows.
In Thursday night's game, they earned the latest loss in their downturn; again at the hands of the York Revolution. That makes the Ducks losers of their last five games in a row; and ten losses in their last thirteen contests. This episode that started back around August 21st has now taken a turn towards the scary because what once was considered a known, has now become rife with uncertainty and well, ...the unknown tends to freak people out. And right now, no one knows what to expect from the Ducks' starting pitchers.
With fifteen games remaining in the regular season, Long Island has now dropped into a second-half tie with the Bridgeport Bluefish for the Liberty Division lead. Additionally, Bridgeport and the York Revolution are coming on strong and threaten to over-take the Ducks for the over-all Atlantic League's best record.
Tonight, they will finish up their series in York while trying to avoid getting swept for a second consecutive set. And where their next victory will be their 70th of the season, confidence isn't as high as their win total right now.
